The announcement came from Governor Cuomo on the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks
As New Yorkers and cities around the world remembered the victims of the terror attacks that took place fifteen years ago on September 11, 2001, Governor Andrew Cuomo has announced plans for a monument to be built that will honor the first responders who risked their lives and took action on that horrific day in New York City (h/t Gothamist).
The monument will pay tribute not only to the responders who lost their lives, but also to those who survived yet have since suffered from health issues related to search and rescue, clean-up, and other after effects. "This monument will rightly serve as an eternal reminder of the courage, sacrifice, and bravery demonstrated by our first responders and survivors in the aftermath of 9/11, and ensure that their legacy will never be forgotten," Governor Cuomo stated in his announcement. The state has not yet determined a location or design for the monument but plans to launch a "Request for Proposals" that will hopefully help work out the details.
