South Street Seaport’s Pier 16 will regain a rare historic sailing ship

131-year old sailing ship, Wavertree, will return sporting its $16 million restoration

It was less than a month ago when South Street Seaport lost one of its historic ships, the Peking as she headed back to her home in Germany to receive a $30 million restoration before permanently heading to a new museum. But now, another historic vessel will make its way back to the Seaport, giving visitors a new vessel to revel over.

Wavertree, a 270-foot long wrought-iron sailing ship will arrive at South Street’s Pier 16 after undergoing a 16-month restoration from the New York City Department of Design and Construction. Following its pricey rejuvenation ($16 million, to be exact), the 131-year old vessel will be placed as a permanent exhibition and educational space. According to DNAinfo, the boat’s decks have been replaced and received heavy barnacle srcubbing, rendering it in far better condition to accommodate visitors.

Wavertree is the world’s last remaining wrought-iron sailing ship and will dock at Pier 16 around 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 24th.
