The museum’s parking lots and other areas are being used for staging
If you had ambitions to check out the Queens Museum in the next week or two, you’re going to need to postpone your plans. According to DNAInfo, heightened security for the US Open is hindering access to the borough art museum—so much so that it will be shuttered from September 3rd until the tournament is over on the 11th. (Since the museum is always closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, that means it won’t actually re-open to the public until the 14th.)
The issue is that the Queens Museum is located just a few hundred feet from the brand new Grandstand Stadium, which debuted this season—and putting pressure on the area around the museum. "Since the US Open started, half a dozen NYPD cars have been parked in front of the museum throughout the day," reports DNAInfo. "That’s in addition to museum lots used as NYPD staging areas for vans, trucks, and command units."
It’s the first time the museum has had to close for the event, but then, it’s also the first year with the new stadium. A spokesperson for Citywide Even Coordination and Management told DNAInfo that "the city will continue working closely with our neighbors, like the Queens Museum, to ensure security and accessibility during large-scale events." So, maybe next year?
For now, it seems that we can have tennis, and we can have art, but we cannot have them both at the same time.
