Once-scandalous Upper East Side townhouse wants $23.75M

The home was once owned by art fraudster Lawrence B. Salander, who sold it in 2010

The grand 6-story townhouse at 63 East 82nd Street is back on the market, and this time, it’s listed at a whopping $23.75 million. "Masterfully conceived with the finest finishes, innovative systems, and luxurious amenities," the renovated turn-of-the-century home has nearly everything you could want in your palatial Upper East Side townhouse: a sweeping staircase, endless oak floors, nine wood-burning fireplaces, and an intriguing whiff of scandal.

To recap: the exquisite 9,000-square-foot home once belonged to Lawrence B. Salander, best known for selling artwork he didn’t own as part of a $120 million art fraud scheme. He bought the place in 2004 for a mere $4.75 million, but put it back on the market (with judicial permission) after filing for bankruptcy in 2008. The listing price then: $25 million. Alas, there were no takers, despite Salander’s renovations, and the home ultimately sold in 2010 for $13.9 million—not quite what he wanted, but still a tidy profit.

Has the storied townhome truly appreciated $10 million (or so) in the last six years? Time will tell, but sunny six-bedroom house certainly has its charms. In addition to a Clue-like maze of rooms, including a formal dining room, formal living room, library, and fifth-floor great room, the place is outfitted with an elevator, multiple butler kitchens, a gourmet kitchen, and 35 feet of landscaped garden. Presumably, you will have to bring your own art.
