The East Harlem hospital has filed plans for a new residential tower
A 16-story apartment building will rise on the parking lot of Metropolitan Hospital Center in East Harlem. According to YIMBY, the public hospital has filed plans to construct a Dattner Architects-designed tower at 1880 First Avenue that will house 153 apartments and include a 650-square-foot community facility, bike parking, and a lobby on the ground floor.
Though it hasn’t been disclosed as to whether the units will be rentals or condos, YIMBY speculates that the project will be affordable housing. It will neighbor Draper Hall, the former nurse dormitory that is being converted into subsidized senior housing.
News that Metropolitan Hospital will potentially offer affordable housing while continuing to service the neighborhood is good news, considering a time when New York City hospitals are struggling to remain afloat. Mount Sinai Beth Israel announced plans to close its 825-bed facility in Gramercy to rebuild smaller nearby and St. Vincent’s Hospital was razed to create what is now a condo development named Greenwich Lanes.
