Red Hook Will Get a Huge, Norman Foster-Designed Office Complex

Will rise next to the IKEA building in the neighborhood

A massive, Norman Foster-designed office building is set to rise on the Red Hook waterfront with construction expected to begin this summer, Bloomberg reports. Developed by Thor Equities, the project will include 600,000 square feet of offices, and 23,000 square feet of retail.

Plans also call for the creation of a publicly accessible waterfront esplanade, rooftop terraces, and a central courtyard. The offices will be spread out over two four-story buildings that will afford tenants views of the Statue of Liberty and Lower Manhattan.

The new offices will replace the former home of the Revere Sugar Refinery in the neighborhood, a site that's located next to the IKEA building, and is surrounded by water on three sides. Thor purchased the site for $40 million in 2005.

The offices are being targeted towards technology, advertising, and media companies, but construction on the Foster + Partners-designed complex will get underway this summer, regardless of a tenant having signed on.

Rumors last year hinted at a mixed-use property for the site, but Thor has now confirmed construction on the office complex.
