The penthouse sold for $18M less than its initial ask
Publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst's real estate legacy in New York was on full blast last year, when both his stunning Central Park West and sprawling Riverside Drive penthouses were listed, exhaustively reported on, and ultimately sold. It's been over a year since the expansive penthouse of The Clarendon at 137 Riverside Drive entered contract at $24 million, but that listing has finally closed. City records reveal that penthouse went for $20 million to the mysterious A.H. 2012 Family Trust.
The 17,000-square-foot penthouse, formerly owned by extolled art and furniture collector Benedict Silverman, first hit the market asking $34 million in March 2014. In Hearst's time, the palatial penthouse was an even larger quintuplex. It wasn't until the depression hit and the penthouse was divided into several smaller apartments—if 7,000 square feet of indoor space and 10,000 square feet of outdoor space can be considered small—that the penthouse was molded into the triplex it is today.
