A seven-unit townhouse is being transformed into an $18 million megamansion
How many megamansions are too many megamansions for one neighborhood? In Brooklyn Heights, that remains to be seen. The 7,750-square-foot townhouse at 146 Willow Street, previously split into seven rental units, is being renovated and will be marketed as a single-family home, according to the Wall Street Journal. It'll join the five-story, 20-unit rental building on the corner of Orange and Hicks Streets that's now for sale, asking $22 million also as a massive single-family property.
146 Willow Street isn't as sprawling, but it sounds impressive nonetheless. Developer Shahrzad Khayami of AscentSeven purchased the landmarked house in 2014 for $6.8 million. He spent two years, and an undisclosed sum, restoring the facade and rebuilding the interior. The five-story home will have seven bedrooms, with a meditation room in the master suite. An elevator will take you up to the roof deck, complete with a wet bar and fridge. And the cellar holds a wine room. Finally, a dumbwaiter will carry food from the kitchen to the dining room on the parlor floor. (For comparison, the Orange Street property would have four bedrooms, a gym, wine cellar and roof terrace.)
Construction is expected to wrap in September and it'll go on the market at an ask of $18 million. Either one of these megamansions, if sold anywhere near ask, would beat out the $15.5 million sale of 177 Pacific Street as the priciest home to sell in Brooklyn. Khayami told WSJ that he wanted to convert this to a single family because of the demand for large homes in Brooklyn Heights, "much of it driven by families sending their children to Brooklyn private schools."
