Birkenstock heir lists lavish, antique-filled pad as $19,000/month rental

The over-the-top apartment comes fully furnished with a museum's worth of antiques

For a while there, Alex Birkenstock, heir to the world's earthiest sandal fortune, was trying to unload this lavish penthouse at Broad Street's The Setai. In early 2014, he was asking $12.995 million for the two-bedroom apartment-cum-museum of international intrigue, but even after chopping the price down to $9,995,000, the luxe condo failed to change hands.

Now, the place has hit the market once again, and this time, it's back as a $19,000/month rental unit [h/t 6sqft]. Furnished with a gallery's worth of global antiques, the 3,500-square-foot pad has so many over-the-top details it is nearly impossible to list them all. Still, we'll try.

Among the highlights: a 1,000-pound steel-and-brass safe from the Bank of France in Vichy circa 1880; reclaimed hardwood floors from the Portuguese embassy in Paris; 1930s floral-patterned hand-cut blue stone tiles from Belgium; an imported Mexican bathtub cut from a single stone; Art Deco kitchen doors salvaged from a Hawaiian theater in the 1920s; and not one but two Murano glass chandeliers (from the 1920s and 1970s, respectively).

Despite its many (many) antique charms, the apartment is also full of modern amenities, including (though not limited to) motorized blinds, two floor-to-ceiling wine refrigerators, custom zinc-and-brass cabinetry, and a 50-inch television that descends from the ceiling with the push of a button. The views aren't bad either: you can take in both the Statue of Liberty and One World Trade Center from the comfort of the living room.
