Historic Flatiron church gutted by fire will be restored, reverend assures

The landmarked building was ravaged by an accidental fire this spring

It’s been a while since any news regarding the fate of the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of St. Sava, the historic Flatiron church that was ravaged by a devastating fire in May, has surfaced. Over the summer, its future seemed uncertain, as church officials met with various city agencies in a quest to get the building rebuilt. Though it remain unclear just how, church Reverend Zivojin Jakovljevic says that church leaders are "definitely planning" to find a way for the house of worship will be restored, reports the New York Post.

"It’s a place of prayer that has been here for almost two centuries and a place that has welcomed so many of our people," Jakovljevic told the Post. He didn't elaborate on what a restoration would entail, however.

Gutted by a four-alarm fire sparked by unattended Easter candles on May 1, all that remains of the 160-year-old church is its outer shell. At the request of the city, the damaged roof beams were replaced by metal ones. Church officials would have to get approval from the Landmarks Preservation Commission on any redesign that might be envisioned for the church.
