David Chipperfield’s first NYC condo, The Bryant, tops out

The 34-story building will have a hotel on the lower floors with 57 condos above

Well-known British architect David Chipperfield’s first New York City residential project, The Bryant, has topped out at 34 stories. On Tuesday, developer HFZ Capital held a topping out ceremony on one of the upper floors of the under-construction building, which features a total of 57 condos, and a 230-room hotel on the first 15 floors.

"What we have accomplished here is that we’ve created a unique elegant building, Ziel Feldman, the founder and managing partner of HFZ Capital Group, said at the ceremony. "It doesn’t shout out like a lot of the glass towers in the city but we’ve created a symmetry and a marriage that will create an oasis in Midtown."

"It’s much easier to work with cultural institutions," Chipperfield, who's known for projects like the Neues Museum in Berlin, said, "but our cities are not just museums and libraries, we need high quality architecture in housing as well."

Curbed had a chance to tour the model apartment of the building, located across the street on Fifth Avenue, back in April when the The Bryant stood just 26 floors. Apartments in the building, which stands on the last developable parcel along Bryant Park, range in size from one- to four- bedrooms and include two triplex penthouses. Prices start at $2.25 million for a one-bedroom and go up to just under $10 million for a four-bedroom. Prices for the penthouses have yet to be revealed.

Condos in the building that are currently on the market are priced from $2.57 million for a one-bedroom on the 23rd floor and go up to $6.94 million for a three-bedroom on the 31st floor. Feldman said about 40 percent of the apartments at the condo had sold so far, which he called remarkable for a project at this stage of construction. Work on the project, which is located at 16 West 40th Street, is expected to wrap up sometime next year.
