Park Avenue once again becomes a pedestrian-friendly pathway during the now-beloved event
The time when New Yorkers can run, walk, bike, and play along nearly seven miles of traffic-free Manhattan streets has arrived—Summer Streets (now christened Citi Summer Streets) is back for another three Saturdays, beginning this weekend.
Among the many free activities that'll be happening are fitness classes, live performances, food tastings, and walking tours. And because it wouldn't be Summer Streets without a stunt-like attraction (dumpster pools, anyone?), there'll be a zip line that stands 30 feet high and 165 feet long, and the new 300-foot water slide.
To accommodate the festivity-filled event, the entire stretch of Park Avenue from Chambers Street (and Lafayette Street before it turns into Park) all the way up to 72nd Street will be a car-free sanctuary. Additionally, there will be five rest stops located uptown, midtown, at Astor Place, in Soho, and at Foley Square, each with their own cool things to do scheduled for the duration of the day.
On August 13th, the Department of Transporatation will reintroduce Shared Streets, an initiative that debuted during last year's program. It encourages a speed limit of 5mph in the historic lower Manhattan district from Broadway to Water Street and from Park Row to State Street while encouraging participants exploring both on foot vehicular to take the time to tour and admire the various points of interests from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In the past few years, nearly 300,000 people participated in the Summer Streets festivities.
