The $32 million project will be ready in the summer of 2018
The Studio Gang-designed firehouse located right at the border of Crown Heights and Brownsville, is now moving forward, following the announcement of the project in January this year. Last week the FDNY and the city’s Department of Design and Construction broke ground on the 21,000 square foot facility located at 1815 Sterling Place.
The building will be home to Brooklyn’s Rescue Company 2, and it’s been designed in such a way that firefighters here will be able to enact rescue scenarios, particularly in taller buildings where they have to deal with balconies, stairs and ladders. The building’s also designed to be energy efficient what with a green roof and a geothermal system located 500-feet below ground. The latter will help regulate the temperature inside the building.
"This firehouse will be a leader in energy efficiency, moving our city closer to an environmentally sustainable and resilient future," Mayor Bill de Blasio said in a statement. "With ample space for tools and a training facility on the roof, this firehouse will be the impressive space that New York’s bravest deserve."
Being constructed at a cost of $32 million, the project is expected to be complete in the summer of 2018.
