Originally built in 1868, the townhouse on East 62nd Street has since gotten a thoroughly modern update
You wouldn’t know it by looking at this Upper East Side home’s modern interiors, but it’s located within the Treadwell Farms Historic District, an itty-bitty area that encompasses only a few homes on East 61st and East 62nd Streets between Second and Third Avenues. This particular townhouse was built in 1868, according to the Landmarks Preservation Commission designation for the district, and probably cost around $15,000 when it was completed.
That’s a far cry from its current asking price of $8 million, but to be fair, it’s gotten some updates in the ensuing 148 years. Though it was originally built as a single-family home, it’s since been converted into a multi-family, and now has two duplex apartments over its four stories. Both have been given the contemporary treatment, with modern furnishings (Barcelona chairs, built-in bookshelves, a sculptural staircase, and the like), and renovated kitchens and bathrooms; there’s also a finished basement and plenty of outdoor space.
