Construction Begins on WeWork's Fanciful Brooklyn Navy Yard Home

Part of a new, 16-story building being constructed at Dock 72

Work is now underway on the 675,000 square foot Brooklyn Navy Yard building that will be home to coworking company, WeWork. On Thursday, members of the development team including the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation, Rudin Development and Boston Properties, along with members of the de Blasio administration broke ground on the project at Dock 72.

The $380 million project will see the transformation of the dock into a 16-story building that will create jobs for as many as 4,000 people. WeWork will serve as the anchor tenant taking up about 222,000 square feet of space, and the rest of the building will serve as office space for creative and tech companies. WeWork's space will also include 35,000 square feet of amenities like a health and wellness center and a rooftop conference center.

"WeWork is proud to be the anchor tenant of the landmark redevelopment project of Dock 72 in the Brooklyn Navy Yard," Miguel McKelvey, one of the co-founders of WeWork, said in a press release. "A redevelopment project of this size and scale is a testament to the vision of our co-developers and of New York City to reinvent, reuse and revitalize this historically significant place."

The project is being designed by S9 Architecture and will likely be complete sometime next year. The building will also include 35,000 square feet of amenities and 18,000 square feet of private outdoor terraces.

Dock 72 is just one of the several projects currently transforming Brooklyn Navy Yard with $700 million worth of construction activity underway at the site right now.
