Plans to expand Brooklyn Public Library's Sunset Park branch are getting closer to reality with the BPL considering a temporary move to a nearby courthouse while the library redevelopment is underway, DNAinfo reports.
The project is being developed in collaboration with the Fifth Avenue Committee, and will see the construction of a new eight-story building at the existing site of the library at 5108 Fourth Avenue. That new building will include a 21,000 square feet library on the lower levels, and 49 affordable apartments above that.
An earlier iteration of this plan had called for over 50 apartments, and a smaller library, but after some community backlash, BPL agreed to creating a larger library.
The project will have to make its way through the Uniform Land Use Review Procedure (ULURP) before construction gets underway, but if the plans are approved, BPL will move the Sunset Park branch to a 5,000 square foot space in the neighborhood courthouse, which is currently home to a NYPD applicant processing unit.
For the the project to move forward, the Fifth Avenue Committee will purchase the library site from the city, construct the new building, and then hand back ownership of the new library space to the city.
