De Blasio administration secures land for 500 apartments
In an effort to keep his commitment of building tens of thousands of units of affordable housing, Mayor de Blasio plans to announce the creation of nearly 500 affordable housing units for low-income tenants, according to the New York Times. That'll happen by leasing public housing land in Brooklyn and the Bronx.
With emphasis placed on accommodating the low-income elderly, the proposal includes a 145-unit, 16-story building in Fort Greene’s Ingersoll Houses to be dubbed "Ingersoll Senior" for individuals 62 and older, and a nine-floor building with 156 apartments in the South Bronx’s Mill Brook Houses. Amenities will include a senior center, rooftop garden, and myriad other cultural and health services. Meanwhile, at the Van Dyke Houses in Brownsville, plans include a 13-story building with 188 homes for families and singles earning between 30 to 60 percent of the area median income. This facility will feature more substantial amenities that include an urgent care center, pre-k and after-school programs, a wellness center, and more.
Realizing the dire need for low-cost housing, Mayor de Blasio plans to build 80,000 affordable units over the next 10 years. Land for the Ingersoll, Mill Brook, and Van Dyke Houses has been leased for 60 years, guaranteeing affordability until then. Developers chosen for the projects are BFC Partners, Dunn Development, and West Side Federation for Senior and Supportive Housing.
