Bronx Affordable Housing Agenda Gets $3M Boost

Ruben Diaz Jr. set aside the funds as part of his 2017 budget

The Bronx is getting a huge boost for affordable housing with the borough’s president having announced a major infusion of cash into creating hundreds of new units. Ruben Diaz, Jr. announced Friday that he would be allocating $3.265 million in the upcoming fiscal year to create 851 units of affordable housing that will be spread out over eight buildings throughout the borough, DNAinfo reports.

The projects receiving the largest sums of cash are a 75-unit building at 1761 Walton Avenue in Mount Hope, which Diaz, Jr. allocated $750,000 towards, a 165-unit building at 869 East 147th Street that’s getting $500,000, as is a 80-100 unit building at 915 Beck Street.

In addition Diaz, Jr. has set aside $165,000 to create a Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) managed mobile service that will help residents across the borough with tenant issues.

Since taking office in 2009, Diaz, Jr. has contributed $49 million of his budget towards housing. For the upcoming year he’s set aside a total of $28.8 million for housing related projects.
