The grand opening of the new space is being accompanied by a weekend-long fair of local vendors
This weekend, Battery Park will debut the Battery Oval, the newest edition to its 25-acre green space. To celebrate the grand opening of the 90,000-square-foot lawn, a festival will ring the Oval, selling food, crafts, plants, produce, and more.
"This is a lush, special place—it’s Downtown’s new backyard, Downtown’s new meeting place," said president of The Battery Conservancy, Warrie Price, about the new lawn. The 8,000-person accommodating lawn is reportedly fertilized with toxin and synthetic-fertilizer free materials, leading by example in promoting healthier alternatives and biodiversity, says DNAinfo.
Another new attribute that you might notice is the lawn’s pretty blue floral-shaped lawn chairs scattered about. These chairs represent the winning design of the Battery Conservancy’s 2014 contest for the optimal chair for their new space.
