Turrell’s in situ installation, Meeting, returns after a three-year renovation
Artist James Turrell, arbiter of 2013’s most Instagrammable moment with his prominent Guggenheim exhibition, will once again be showing in New York City. MoMA PS1 announced today that Turrell’s in situ work Meeting will reopen in the Long Island City offshoot after a three-year restoration.
Meeting, Turrell’s first Skyspace in the United States, offers visitors a framed, but unobstructed view of the sky. The installation first opened to the public in 1986, featuring tungsten bulbs that would emit a yellow light.
The restoration and renovation of the work included the installation of LED fixtures for a new multi-colored lighting program that will synch up with the sunrise and sunset. The renovation also included the installation of new, more durable teak wood seating for viewers.
To celebrate the new features, MoMA PS1 will offer free after-hours viewing through November 5, weather permitting, that’s viewable with a free advance reservation.
Meeting reopens on October 8.
