The project aims to remake a former piano shop and garage into a personal paradise
Two West Village properties that were sold as "the last great mansion site available in Greenwich Village" in 2012 will debut at to the neighborhood at large tonight as a 12,000-square-foot single-family residence.
Plans to transform 85 and 89 Jane Street into a West Village megamansion will be presented for the first time at a meeting for Community Board 2. The turn-of-the-century brick buildings in the Greenwich Village Historic District formerly served as an ice cream factory, Steinway piano showroom, and a garage.
The design to remake the turn-of-the-century buildings into a single-family residence was created by Steven Harris Architects, and can be found on the Community Board's website. The firm was not immediately available for comment. The online presentation details the transformation of the properties into a unified structure with a 41-foot-long facade along Jane Street between Greenwich and Washington streets.
The transformed structure includes two glass elevations that sources say reach up to 90 feet and can be inhabited, as seen in presentation materials. The elevations, which are somewhat uncharacteristic to the historic, squat neighborhood, have been likened to a panopticon. The design also appears to include a significant green space shielded behind the facade.
According to multiple sources who reached Curbed's tipline, the $32 million buyer looking to transform the Jane Street properties is billionaire Jon Stryker, heir to the Stryker Corporation medical supply company fortune. The properties were purchased in 2012 under anonymous LLCs. Stryker's involvement has yet to be confirmed. Curbed has reached out for comment.
